Birthplace of a River

Ever been to the headwaters of the Mississippi? That important river begins as a small creek flowing from Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota. There you can actually wade across the Mississippi in just a few short steps!

The sign at the site reads, "Here [at Lake Itasca], 1475 ft above the ocean, the mighty Mississippi begins to flow on its winding way 2552 miles to the Gulf of Mexico."

Mom and Dad took us to see the headwaters one day in 1965. It turned out Liz, center, had a raging fever when this photo was taken, so I don't think she appreciated the educational experience very much.
