Mammoth Memories

Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota is a great place to take young dinosaur hunters. This museum was erected directly over a site where about 100 immature male mammoths were trapped in a sink hole in prehistoric times. Excavation goes on all year round, and visitors can watch from a walkway surrounding the dig site. My boys had the most fun with the models of huge bones from long ago.

Photo 1: John and David in the jaws of a prehistoric shark
Photo 2: Steven with a model of a mammoth’s thigh bone

Note: The young, immature male mammoths got themselves into big trouble, just like young, immature male humans, perhaps?!  Hmmm…..

Big Boy Boots

I have had a cute photo of my son David wearing his daddy's boots for a long time, but it was originally too blurry for a digi-scrap page.  I tried a bunch of different methods, but none sharpened the photo up enough for me.  Then I stumbled upon the Graphic Novel Filter in Photoshop Elements 11, and I finally was pleased with the result.  In the adjusted photo, David's blue eyes pop right out, and I want to pinch his little cheeks!

The background of the adjusted photo looked a little strange to me with all the lines and high contrast from the filter, so I just extracted out David and made layout around him.

Beautiful June Bride

I decided the picture of my lovely daughter-in-law on her wedding day would be the perfect photo for a June calendar layout.  Don't you agree?

Glensheen Mansion

Glensheen Mansion was beautiful and the tour was fascinating, but that day was overshadowed by ever-increasing pain and a nighttime trip to the ER with kidney stone pain.

Impression of a Gazebo

This past Monday at Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking, we were challenged to use various effects on one of our photos in order to achieve the look of an impressionistic painting. Here is what I created. What is your impression?

CU painting texture from The CoffeeShop Blog

It's nice to see a little summer in winter.

P.S. For those who really want the details, I used PSE 11 to create three layers:
Top - CU painting texture (linear light, 20%);
Middle - copy of photo with "Find Eges" Filter (multiply, 16%);
Bottom - copy of photo with "Paint Daubs" filter set at 13,6, Simple Brush (Normal, 100%)

Chilly Fun

Steven and Sara posed as an American Gothic Couple in front of the snowy sea serpent our family sculpted in our front yard after a 14” snowfall.

There is no snow today, but public schools are closed state-wide due to record low air temperatures and wind chills.  It's warmed up a bit since last night, now only -13 ºF, with a wind chill of -36 ºF.  Last night the air temperature here was in the -20s ºF with wind chills in the -40s ºF.  It was predicted that some spots in Minnesota would have air temperatures in the -30s ºF and wind chills in the -60s ºF.  Brrrrrrr!!  I am very thankful for central heating.

Blazing Through the Air

One of our favorite things to do at the Minnesota State Fair is watch the BMX bikers.  I was really impressed by their tricks this year.
